Supporting the Redwood Community

(Sonoma, Marin, Lake and Mendocino Counties)

Because of our members, Redwood Dental Hygienists' Society was able to donate $5,000 to the George Payne Dental Technology fund in support of keeping our SRJC graduates relevant and effective with the current advancements in Dentistry.

This contribution will help to provide new equipment such as digital x-ray sensors and computers for each operatory in order to create a better learning environment and assist our students in achieving a higher standard of practice for the patients of our community.

We are grateful to all of our members for their continued support of our profession and our community.

can reduce the incidence of dental decay by up to 60% and are about 1/3 the cost a having a tooth filled after it gets a cavity.

The School Smile Program was launched in 2013 by the Sonoma County Department of Health Services and Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County during the 2013-14 academic year.  The program was piloted in seven of 28 Sonoma County Schools which have greater than 50% enrollment in the Free/Reduced Lunch program and was considered a success.  The program serves over 9 schools in Sonoma County and plans to expand to 12 schools for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. In addition to our RDHS members, the program also works collaboratively with our local community clinics.

Because of her dedication to children's oral health in our community, Program Manager of the School Smile Program, and long-time RDHS member, Kathy Kane was awarded the ADHA Institute for Oral Health's Wrigley Community Service Grant.  The $5,000 grant will help provide clinical supplies & small equipment for the Sonoma County school-based preventative program which allows RDHAP providers to place sealants and fluoride varnish for children who have limited access to dental care.  The program also provides classroom education, treatment referral and case management based on an individual dental health assessment.

It is estimated that 5 of every 10 children in Sonoma County suffer from dental decay.  Dental sealants

Director of SRJC Dental Programs, Carol Hatrick and Dean of Health Sciences Deborah Chigazola accept the donation on behalf of the SRJC Dental Clinic.

A child receives dental sealants from RDHS Member Ingri Sparling, RDHAP and her assistant.

RDHS is a proud endorser of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services' Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life initiative.  Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life is a county-wide campaign which advocates oral health for adults, children, infants and expectant mothers.
